The first NSR250R-SP was a limited version of the 1988 MC18, finished in Rothmans Honda race colours. Its main hardware change was lightweight magnesium wheels; unlike later SPs it kept the standard wet clutch. It was the bike that took the NSR's first title in Japan's SP production-racing class.
